The day began with a host of races for children of all ages. DJ Lance Rock, along with members of Yo Gabba Gabba, performed while tykes and teenagers zoomed around the historic park. Later on in the day, Mister Cee, Biz Markie laid down the beats for the amateur and pro races. Olympic Silver Medalist Nelson Vails was in attendance to oversee the children’s races, which had been deemed a Mayor’s Cup event. The winners were crowned as the “Fastest riders in New York City.” Winners received a new bicycle, and all children who competed were given a free helmet courtesy of the Department of Transportation. In the women’s race, sprinting sensation Laura Van Gilder bested her peers in a race in a short race that was beset by a sudden rainstorm. The men’s pro race got off to a hair-raising start as the residual wet roads forced riders to enter the turns with caution. Early on in the race, German track champion Christian Grasmann (Transalt.org p/b Rockstar Games) attacked the field and was able to keep the field 15 to 20 seconds back. He was soon joined by his teammate, Leif Lampater. The duo, both known for their prowess as six-day racers, kept an unrelenting pace going until the end. The rest of the field was unable to organize and form an effective chase. The pair fended off numerous attacks and they were able to maintain a gap that ranged from 15-30 seconds. Grasmann and Lampater seized 1st and 2nd, respectively, followed by Melito Heredia (Innovation Bike) in the field sprint. The event itself was both a celebration of Harlem and a memorial for the race’s founder, the late David J Walker. Walker was an NYPD Community Affairs Officer who founded the Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic with the purpose of inspiring children to ride bicycles for exercise. He wanted to introduce kids to a healthy lifestyle, provide a productive outlet to harness their energy, and teach safety, responsibility, and sportsmanship. The present-day event pays homage to both him and the classic American bike races of the Roaring Twenties that were rich with speed, money, and glamour.
